What is the purpose of tail skid in an aircraft?
lot of guys have answered correctly - yes fitted on aircraft protect rear fuselage damage in event of tail scrape / impact damage. tail-strikes can occur during take off or landing, through over-rotation / poor landing technique / etc
unfortunately, not offer protection structural damage - in case can identify impact areas , provide rough indication of severity, may not obvious @ time.
identifying tail-strikes crucial given pressurised compartments can compromised. may not seem serious @ time if compartment fails , depressurises (rapidly!) on subsequent flight results can catastrophic. aircraft not particularly resistant impacts on part of structure , sort of tail-strike invoke lengthy inspection , repair procedures.
