Why is my 2000 Volkswagen Golf 2.0 liter smoking?

hello. have 2000 volkswagen golf 2 door, , today noticed there little bit of gray/white smoke coming out of tailpipes when accelerate. wondering issue, , should expect wrong? has been running kind of boggy lately, starts , runs fine other being boggy , slow on acceleration. 2.0 liter 4 cylinder, 5-speed manual. has 111,000 miles on it.
