Is a new Home Theater system necessary?

bought new sony blu-ray player. hooked via hdmi 40 inch sony hdtv few years old. have panasonic speaker system 4 years old hooked around medium-sized living room. connections speakers old not compatible blu-ray player. instead, use panasonic dvd player aux blu-ray player can front speakers work. 2 speakers in rear not seem work blu-ray player though.
