Subaru AT temp light flashes?

'98 subaru legacy @ temp light flashes 16 times when start car, goes off. mechanic check tranny , oil , looks good. also, temp gauge normal. did suggest change tranny fluid when has been while. thinks may malfunctioned sensor???? had issue subaru? feedback appreciated. no real noticeable shifting issues either.
