Where to live in Palo Alto / SF?

hello -

spend year in california next year. traveling husband , newborn son , husband expects working 6 months palo alto , 6 months san francisco. should able afford decent , not big in good/very neighborhood. if @ possible , not inconvenient given time have spend in each city, husband avoid commuting more 30 minutes in morning. (i) should consider living in sf 6 months , in palo alto 6 months (despite moving expenses) (ii) neighborhoods in bay area? great if close synagogue not absolutely necessary.
