Confusion about boats-inboard or outboard?

inboard engine 'regular' sized engine, similar sort used in cars , trucks, , converted application purpose, installed inside hull of boat onto engine bearers.

unlike car or truck, fitted marine gearbox give not three, 4 or 5 forward gears plus reverse, 2 selections: forward , reverse, , in addition, reduce revolutions of engine's crankshaft half. so-called, two-to-one (2:1) reduction.

rotary power provided via gearbox transferred separately propeller drive boat along. via long propeller shaft supported bearings, , coupled gearbox @ 1 end, , emerging through hull of vessel below waterline @ other.

fuel used inboard engines can either diesel or petrol. (without going in variations, lpg, steam engines, etc - 'inboard' engines, nevertheless.)

coupled apparatus desired gear , speed settings can selected, remotely, person @ controls. , have fuel supply , exhaust systems separate engine itself. vessel being steered using unrelated system.

outboard engine contrast manufactured self-contained unit use boat engine. , small outboard units can installed , removed, clamping , unclamping them boat each time used.

installed outside hull of boat being hung either directly onto bearer across of boat or bracket fitted boat purpose of holding outboard engine. always, outboard engines equipped 'clamps', tighten down hand this, once have hung engine on bearer or bracket. big outboard engines have special mounting plates , bolted of vessel.

outboard engines hung inside purpose-built 'wells', inside vessel. still called 'outboard' engines!

outboard engines more-or-less self-contained units: own exhaust system, gearbox and, next this, propeller. , small units have own fuel tanks built in. rotate within component used clamp them boat, can used steer vessel: power steering! (and reverse steering).

on these latter units, remote fuel tanks may used. on medium , bigger units (without fuel tanks) remote tanks must used. can removed boat , carried hand. example, purpose of filling @ fuel station.

fuel used outboard engines petrol. diesel fuel versions have been made in past couple of companies (ruggerini , yanmar), not commercial success.

small-to-medium sized outboard engines can either controlled directly, operating own gear , throttle leavers , turning unit hand using own 'tiller-arm' steering, or same, remote methods inboard engines referred above.

in such cases, steering can either separate engine, using rudder(s) or steering wheel can coupled outboard engine - rotating engine purpose.

bigger outboard engines use remote systems control speed, select gear, steer , always, start , stop.

in short, range of choice huge. four-seater fishing vessel describe, fifteen eighteen feet long boat, either open or forward 'cuddy' , hand steered outboard engine without remote controls bet start with.
