public libraries have both ancestry.com , heritage quest free use while @ library , library card should able use heritage quest @ home...heritage quest has census , other genealogy reference material helpful in tracing ancestors , ancestry.com has original records of website.

free online resource lds/mormon site, has many free online records @ http://www.familysearch.org/ , original documents on pilot site @ http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsear... . have added new beta site has few more databases, might find useful http://fsbeta.familysearch.org/s/collect... . in addition online records, have family history centers can go research , @ microfilm , charge nominal fees if have order . find location near on website , call check hours of operation. http://www.familysearch.org/ .

additionally, usgen web free online resource @ http://www.usgenweb.org/ . site packed how-to tips, queries , records every state , counties within states. then, there rootsweb @ http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ free site hosted ancestry.com can search surnames, post queries on message boards , subscribe surname mailing lists.

also, not forget check cyndi’s list @ http://www.cyndislist.com/ , progenealogist top 100 genealogist websites @ http://familytreemagazine.com/article/101best2009
both of these sites have many links both free , fee based sites.
