Tax Free Savings Accounts: tax free even for gains made in stocks from other countries?

talking tax free savings accounts , buying american stocks, how these same animal?
if buy american stocks , make money on them, of course taxable
there tax free funds available , municipal bonds tax free
if make gain on american companies, need file , pay taxes on both

i'm little confused. here in canada have option start tsfa , not have pay taxes on of investments canadian government. however, question if bought american stock , made money on it, have pay taxes american government despite not having pay canada?
