Home theater setup HELP?

ok, have home theater/dvd box hooked speakers.
plugged in red , white theater/dvd box, cable box.
put yellow box tv itself.
in setup menu, makes me choose either mulit-channel, or standard.
when choose standard, sound comes right , left speakers, , when choose multi, comes center , surround left , right. (sub works both)
how make 'em work?
