10 illegal aliens in s.c. admit bilking irs out of $13 million

ten people illegally in united states pleaded guilty involvement in four-year, $13 million fraud against internal revenue service, acting u.s. attorney kevin f. mcdonald said thursday.

9 defendants pleaded guilty conspiracy commit mail fraud , entering united states without authorization, assistant u.s. attorney david c. stephens told greenville news .

10th defendant pleaded guilty mail fraud , illegal entry, stephens said. senior u.s. district judge g. ross anderson jr. accepted pleas , sentence defendants later.

“this largest tax fraud case i’m aware of ever occurring in district of south carolina,” stephens said. “this extraordinarily serious, large case.”

mcdonald said between 2006 , november 2009, 2 tax preparation businesses, seguros internacionales, operating in spartanburg , forest city, n.c., , poz servicios para hispanos, operating in boiling springs, along affiliated individuals filed more 10,000 federal income tax returns claiming more $22 million in refunds.

mcdonald identified them edgar carrillo-borjas, miguel angel carrillo-borjas, david hernandez-juarez, ariana canseco-orozco, maribel juan-orozco, cristina sanchez-perez, juan carlos carrillo-roy, carlos carrillo-rodriguez, of mexico, , luis gerardo mora-vargas, of costa rica.

10th person, omar maldonado-cardenas, of mexico, had active role running day-to-day operations @ seguros internacionales 2 years, mcdonald said.

said 2 other people in case pleaded guilty in federal court earlier year obstruction of justice.

juan manuel galban ortega , rodolfo magana escoto, both of mexico, admitted burning documents , records associated seguros internacionales, according mcdonald , federal court records.

on nov. 17, approximately 100 law enforcement agents served search warrants , conducted interviews @ various locations throughout upstate in connection investigation, mcdonald said.

according prosecutors, 12 people convicted remain in federal custody , awaiting sentencing. face maximum penalties ranging 5 20 years. deported after completing sentences, prosecutors said.

in connection case, 5 more people arrested week , charged conspiring defraud united states, according prosecutors , court records.

arrested included yolanda poz of boiling springs, lisa mendoza of spartanburg, teresa bravo of pacolet, , ashley moore of forest city, according mcdonald , court records. fifth person arrested thursday, stephens said.
