How do i start my 1971 volkswagen bug?

okay, bought 1971 volkswagen bug project car fill of time. ran when got it, , drove around quite bit. engine block got crack in it, decided not drive while tried find new engine it. basically, things got in way , haven't driven in 10 months , still don't have new engine. started 4 months ago via jumper cables, , drove around block 4-5 minutes. parked it, turned off engine, , tried start again, battery still dead. tried start again yesterday jumper cables. hooked truck , let run 10 minutes, , when tried start engine barely turns over. has enough power turn on 2-3 times (at rate of 1 turn each second) before drains of power accumulated during 10 minutes of charging. bug has maintenance-free battery. how started without wasting ton of gas letting truck idle hour while charges bug? should try push start it? i've tried before no luck there.
