How come scuba divers flip BACKWARDS off the edge of the boat?

-

(1) preferred entry method small boats, e.g. inflatables, ribs, etc. because space limited, , backwards roll simplest method getting in water.

(2) off larger boat dive platform, or fixed structures such pier, 'giant stride' entry preferred, since diver can see they're going, , sure entry area clear. mask , regulator held in place 1 hand, , equipment/ weights held in place other.

(3) if hit water face-first wearing diving mask, impact can shatter glass (i have seen happen, once), head-first 'diving' entries never used platform.

what reason scuba divers flip on backwards off edge of boat in order enter water?
