My tattoo hurts - Why?

got tattoo last thursday, first, , of today has been 9 days since got it. put a&d ointment on told 1 week, , switched lotion. unscented, uncolored, lanolin free lubriderm. put on , first time , every single time since, has stung crazy. not worried pain (anyone tattoo know there little natural pain in world more painful tattoo) effect have on tattoo. should switch a&d? show go talk tattoo artist? can not see because on back, have been told scabby. have not scraped or picked scabs @ all, , haven't submerged in water or of other stuff says not do. thanks!
