Do I need a new printer?

have mini hp laptop , officejet 6310 in one.
can install software on computer , see 6310 ready in printer , faxes window laptop doesn't realize when printer connected , keeps telling me connect printer.
told me it's problem of cable changed cable. else told me problem of hp computers, other told me have new printer, broken down in printer. printer works on itself, can copy , fax.
how know if problem of printer , have new one?
