New To Photography Tips Please?

hi everyone. wondering if had tips amateur photographer such myself starting out. im interested in artistic portrait photography. @ weekend took photos of friend in costume, various props feathers in hair, mirrors, skulls etc..
anyway, downfall didn't have lighting house lights yellow , flash strong. can imagine real photographers reading cringing apologise butchering art, here learn.

greatful tips on aperture settings, modes, @ or bulbs use in lamps harmonise light studio. white sheets reflect ? anyway keeping in mind im on low budget cant go out buying studio lights yet. need home made fixes if there any. appreciate answers , give 10 points answer.
