Subaru outback, how does the 4wd/AWD work?

hi,

looking @ getting subaru outback (around 1998 model, around 180-200,000kms, $7-10k),
first ever 4wd/awd.
took 1 test drive today, awesome car (compared current daewoo **** box hatchback).
manual , noticed have gear stick, hand brake , theres lever next hand brake. im assuming has awd? engage low range? or perhaps locks 1 of differentials? didn't want try whilst driving since didnt know is.
