2000 Toyota 4Runner transmission slipping?

2000 toyota 4runner v6 160k miles automatic transmission started slipping on cold starts in morning. after starting up, putting in drive , pressing gas pedal first gear doesn't engage slips no real power reaching wheels. after 3-5 seconds of slippage in jumps 1st gear , seems shift normally. based on prognosis? beginning of end transmission, or flush & change fix transmission problem. add fluid? desperate. in advance
