Does 2 domain names with similar content but different metatags help or hinder SEO?

here situation. have website, selling own products mp3's , cd's. started several years ago , had domain name no1. year ago decided rather have domain name no2 reflects business name. site 2 contain 80% similar copy, different meta tags (actually better seo) , time different design well.

here question/problem... defeating myself having 2 domain names 80% similar copy & 95% same products? thought creating competition original site better marketing. site number 1 gets around 4 times traffic , has done in search engine results having been there on. site2 hardly ever turns in first page of search, sells much, know adopt site 2 content if work on 1 site , park domain name, can not figure out why not ranking well.

know enuff seo know 2nd site "should" preforming better, similar link numbers , that. thing can put down several years longer site 1 has been around , mathematical formula search engines use rank you.

advice main question (too similar copy , content on both sites) appreciated
