Can I use two unlike monitors in a multi-monitor set up?

i'm buy hd widescreen computer monitor. right now, have regular 4x3 samsung flatscreen lcd monitor, , i'm going buy graphics card can handle 2 monitors.

i'm wondering, possible set these 2 monitors on same computer, or have more... similar?

also, 4x3 17 inches, , i'm not sure widescreen be, between 20 , 23 inches.
