What do I need to fix my car's audio system?

have 1 12" sub-woofer in trunk. radio not have specific sub-woofer channel, turn bass have add "+6" bass entire sound output. when turn loud, +bass kinda screws audio coming out of regular car speakers. i'm noobie when comes these types of things but, there way (without buying new radio head unit) buy subwoofer controller , able turn subwoofer without having turn bass in radio's equalizer?
