New to home theater (HTIB) with HDMI questions?

i'll in market home theater system new house wired surround sound.

looking @ receivers , saw lot hdmi input/output. guess i'm confused how works. have directv hd-dvr , ps3 i'll want hooked up. have hdmi going each receiver's inputs, hdmi going receiver's output tv?

on note, assume channeling dvr through receiver means normal tv channels in surround sound?
