Check engine light came on?

have 2000 volkswagen golf. last week not start first time jump started , after start fine. mechanic said nothing wrong battery though check engine light on, didn't worry it. got oil change, , light turned off. today wouldn't start again, jump started it, , check engine light on again! possibly wrong it? should replace battery, alternator, spark plugs?!
