Photography Ideas? I was asked to do a photo-shoot?

1 of riding friends saw of photography , asked me come out , photo-shoot of posing chestnut gelding. i'm excited experience because me in developing photography skills, i'm little worried because i've never done portrait work, landscape , nature photos. also, said wants "artsy" photos, i'm not artistic person , prefer straight forward, technical photography, rather pop-art or effect photography.

anyway, hoping hear equine photographers out there, people have had portraits done own horses. need tips on camera settings (i use nikon d80), lighting (we'll outdoors), , different photo compositions , poses try more "artsy" effect.
