looking at, steam paddle boat. steam engine turns gear wheel, in turn turns huge paddle see on painting. paddles provided forward , backward motion, while rudders, below (in water) steered boat left , right.

i looking @ painting of opening of suez canal , there boats have looks ferris wheels on them , don't understand how they're powered. thank you
