Connecting laptop to external monitor, how to adjust resolution?

tonight tried connecting laptop (with 15.6 inch screen) external computer monitor (with 19 inch screen) via vga cable, worked fine connect two, resolution didn't like, laptop has screen resolution of 1366x768 , when connected external monitor laptop, laptop adjusted it's resolution 1366x768 1024x768, , displayed on both laptop screen , external monitor, resolution fitted monitor on laptop whole desktop screen centered big black bars on each side, , tried adjusting screen resolution on laptop, wouldn't go higher 1024x768 while connected external monitor, , i'm wondering max screen resolution monitor or there way make laptop screen display higher on it? monitor have acer al1916w, thanks.
