Music theater songs??

musical theater songs aren't considered classical (although operettas have been performed on broadway). , won't find under "pop" music either, although many new musicals pastiche of pop songs stuck loosely plotted play: "mamma mia" (abba), "movin' out" (billy joel),"jersey boys" (frankie valli & 4 seasons), etc.etc.
try out though, quite honestly, "best" highly subjective, , musical theatre tradition (as think of it) goes 19th century gilbert , sullivan, franz lehar, etc.

since "phantom of opera" , "cats" try other andrew lloyd webber musicals such "evita" ("don't cry me, argentina"), "sunset boulevard" ("as if we've never said goodbye"), jesus christ superstar (title song, plus things "i don't know how love him", "song , dance") ("tell me on sunday", "unexpected song"), "aspects of love" (bad play, pretty music--"chanson d'enfance", "anything lonely"). can count on webber produce @ least 1 hummable melody out of crappiest work.
if music "les miserables" (you boyle's rendition of "i dreamed dream") original london cast recording more songs "on own", "castle on cloud", "bring him home", "empty chairs , empty tables" , "at end of day". same composers wrote "miss saigon".
don't forget stephen sondheim! don't know why criticized not being able write beautiful melodies. wrote gorgeous stuff "not day goes by" "merrily roll along", "send in clowns" "a little night music", "i remember" "evening primrose", "children listen" "into woods", , fun, difficult sing, stuff "sweeney todd:the demon barber of fleet street".
singer/actress elaine paige sang lot of sondheim in day.

if want sheet music, absolute best anthology i've found, , recommend hal leonard's "the singer's musical theatre anthology". broken voice parts (soprano, mezzo-soprano/belter, tenor, baritone/bass, duets) , each voice part has 5 volumes plus accompaniment cds (available either separately or set). each volume has different songs , printed in key used in original theatrical score (sometimes dramatically different in regular sheet music books).
