What is a good source for studying your personal genealogy?

well, best place start relatives. grill parents, grandparents. grill great-grandparents if you're fortunate enough still have them alive. (if 1 of kids in family gets interested enough, can grill great-great-grandmother.)

family bible comes next. when started genealogical research, recored every single name , date in grandmother's family bible.

once you've exhausted family and, if there one, family bible, there 2 resources. 1 ancestry.com. can't afford pay membership, go library. go local library , ask them geneology resources. they, too, might have membership ancestry.com.

other resource mormons. let me put way. not single member of family (not including mormons in family, brother-in-law , wife, that's hubby's family) mormon or has ever been mormon. however, mormon databases have more information on family's history ancestry.com. through mormon databases tracked branch germany in 1500s.
