history of web browser dates in late 1980s, when variety of technologies laid foundation first web browser, worldwideweb, tim berners-lee in 1991. browser brought variety of existing , new software , hardware technologies.
ted nelson , douglas engelbart developed concept of hypertext long before berners-lee , cern. became core of world wide web. berners-lee acknowledge engelbart's contribution.
introduction of ncsa mosaic web browser in 1993 – 1 of first graphical web browsers – led explosion in web use. marc andreessen, leader of mosaic team @ ncsa, started own company, named netscape, , released mosaic-influenced netscape navigator in 1994, became world's popular browser, accounting 90% of web use @ peak (see usage share of web browsers).
microsoft responded browser internet explorer in 1995 (also heavily influenced mosaic), initiating industry's first browser war. bundling internet explorer windows, microsoft able leverage dominance in operating system market take on web browser market; internet explorer usage share peaked @ on 95% 2002. internet explorer has 60% browser usage share of september 2010 according net applications, , continues show negative trend.
opera first appeared in 1996; although has never achieved widespread use, browser usage share stable around 2.4% of september 2010, has substantial share of fast-growing mobile phone web browser market, being preinstalled on over 40 million phones. available on several other embedded systems, including nintendo's wii video game console.
in 1998, netscape launched become mozilla foundation in attempt produce competitive browser using open source software model. browser evolve firefox, developed respectable following while still in beta stage of development; shortly after release of firefox 1.0 in late 2004, firefox (all versions) accounted 7.4% of browser use. of september 2010, firefox has 23% usage share.
apple's safari had first beta release in january 2003; has dominant share of apple-based web browsing, accounting 5.3% of entire browser market of september 2010 , gaining. rendering engine, called webkit, running in standard browsers of several mobile phone platforms, including apple ios, google android, nokia s60 , palm webos.
recent major entrant browser market google's webkit-based chrome, first released in september 2008. market share has risen; of september 2010, has 8% usage share , appears gaining further in coming months.
