Is the mazda rx8 good used?

i'll disagree richard has fallen "rotary-stereotype" trap.

rotary engines not consume huge amounts of oil or gas. it's true don't great gas mileage, should 17 mpg city , around 22 mpg hwy. oil consumption design that's way rotor seals lubricated, healthy engine consume 1 quart every 1500 - 2000 miles or so. , since should oil changes every 3000 miles means you'll add 1 quart between changes.

rx7-fd series (3rd gen, twin turbo) known short engine life...but...that in hands of kids mod engine , run boost levels high. rotary engines unforgiving of engine knock or detonation 1 severe detonation incident can destroy apex seals. why engines programmed run richer piston engine, contributing low fuel mileage.

now, buying used rotary engine car can more risky. not because of reliability issues manufacturer, because of poor rotary engine knowledge of many of owners. rotary engines need driven hard prevent carbon build-up cause more problems in rotary piston engine. , people don't change oil enough contributing more internal deposits because dirty oil not burn off cleanly when injected combustion chambers. there's kids put in synthetic oil, again not burn off cleanly because that's it's designed do.

so, if you're going buy used rx7 or rx8 want mazda dealer or rotary specialist mechanic couple things. first, have them compression , vacuum leak-down test. requires special equipment rotary , regular mechanics cannot this. if engine passes tests it's indicator engine healthy. next, have mazda or rotary mechanic carbon clean-up procedure. again, requires special solvents ones used on piston engine harsh. once done should go.

rx8 great car. whine not being fast enough if read issues of car & driver , other mags you'll see rx8 kicks butt on track chassis tuning , brakes play more important role torque or hp. rx8 seldom lost 350z on track, , while rx8 made c & d's top ten list 4 years in row, 350z never made once...
