A good beginners book about photography?

i've been disappointed bad photos cheap point-and-shoot camera makes, treated myself d90 kit. i'd feel money going waste if don't learn use properly. need beginner's book digital photography. don't mind if technical; in fact, i'd love if goes deep theory, long explains basics, too. meant textbook aspiring professional photographers nicely; please none of "i'll hide complexity behind bad jokes" scott kelby type of books.
