Single speed / fixed gear bike?

dude, live in sf bay area, , plan on riding ss hardtail , school when weather cooperates. i've been riding ss on trails too, , know it's not of difference, lot more fun riding geared. don't know why.

go , ride commute; bike work great, , full rigid or hardtail mtb might better, depending on condition of roads.

for commuting & work,why single speed or fixed gear bike terrible?? thought bike because looks light , fast unlike 1 of mountain bike thick wheels.
haven't tried riding single speed / fixed gear bike.
