Would I be better off with a Volkswagen or a Honda?

ok, might bit of long question bear me (sorry!).

i'm looking used car. i've narrowed down honda (accord , civic) , volkswagen (passat , jetta). right own accord i've had past 7 years. it's given me little trouble , love (i'm sad it's come end of its' lifespan). problem is, hondas i've been looking in area within price , year range haven't been niceest , seem overpriced condition. on other hand, vws i've looked @ have been nice , have been less hondas i've seen. i've had friends who've owned vws , sing praises, know they're expensive fix when goes wrong, kind of worries me considering i'm looking @ used cars.

point, should honda - i'm well-accustomed them - , pay more not nice or nicer, less expensive vw potentially pay later in repair bills? desperately need because it's making difficult choose car quickly!
