Cheap (used) Kia Sportage or pricier Toyota Echo (or Honda Passport)?

i've been researching used cars weeks, focusing on small suvs. didn't have luck that, broadened interest , came across '01 toyota echo w/ 96k miles $5k. new in , out. plus amazing mpg. i've heard since it's made cheap, kind of (for toyota anyway). since i'll taking 4 hour (200 mile) each way car rides every month or so. plus it's car, not little suv reeeally want.

sportage, on other hand, '02, 140k miles, condition, $3200. miles high worries me, hear kias pretty cheap fix up. know i'd getting literally half mpg echo.

3rd option '01 honda passport, @ 90k miles $4900. thing i've read says more of isuzu honda, , money i'd want real honda quality vehicle. (as broke college student, $5k limit)

anyway, have experience these? think bang buck? guys!
