Best/Affordable Commute route from Los Angeles to Pocatello?

ok... one's toughie... i'm traveling los angeles, ca pocatello, id...
planned drive up, 12hr min commute, 5 passengers in 5 seater
-- if using personal car (gas fees $150-$250) economy size car ... ugh... sooo crowded...
-- total cost mini suv - $700-$800 ($550 car rental , $150-$250 gas?)
greyhound - 21hr - 2 transfers $2000 total round trip (5 ppl)
united airlines/delta = $500-$550/person total $2500 - $3000 round trip

know of other public commute systems goes los angeles idaho???
couldn't figure out if metro link goes far, or if amtrak option.
