Help with genealogy? I don't know how to get information for my family tree!?

have broken family tree...i know grandparents names, , of great grandparents names , birthdays well...i have never had connection father's family, or of mother's distant family since have passed on. want know more me, history, , family. want able @ least trace few generations back, keep hitting roadblocks these ridiculous sites want $20 month research want do. dont know start getting information births, birth places, marriages, etc. ideas how can without going bankrupt on these "tree" websites??
