piss christ small plastic crucifix submerged in glass of artist's urine. piece winner of southeastern center contemporary art's "awards in visual arts" competition, sponsored in part national endowment arts, united states government agency offers support , funding artistic projects. government funding of crucifix in urine caused major uproar people thought not $15,000 of our tax dollars should spent.

following controversy came artist chris ofili’s virgin mary done in poop. upset church , government.
in 1999, city-funded brooklyn museum of art came under fire when exhibited chris ofili painting of virgin mary featured sexually explicit cutouts covered elephant dung. catholic church, new york city mayor rudolph giuliani, outraged. giuliani denounced exhibit morally offensive , threatened cut off funding museum , terminate lease if did not cancel exhibit included ofili’s painting. city followed through , withheld museum’s rent payment october , filed state lawsuit lease revoked.

countermeasure, museum filed suit in federal court against city claiming violations of first ammendment, , seeking permanent injunction against city keep withholding funds. u.s. district judge nina gershon, sided museum, , granted them preliminary injunction. city ordered resume museum's funding, , stop eviction.
